When patient- and family-centered care is practiced it shapes health care policies, programs, facility design, evaluation of health care, and day-to-day interactions among patients, families, physicians, and other health care professionals. These practitioners acknowledge that emotional, social, and developmental support are integral components of health care. Patient- and family-centered approaches lead to better health outcomes and wiser allocation of resources as well as to greater patient and family satisfaction.
